Enable completes Oaks double for Nathaniel

Nathaniel's first-crop daughter Enable displayed another brilliant performance to complete the Oaks double, cruising to victory in the Gr.1 Darley Irish Oaks by five and a half lengths at the Curragh today.

In doing so she was stamping her authority as the best three-year-old filly in Europe, and perhaps the best middle-distance three-year-old of either sex.

Trained by John Gosden, Enable travelled like a dream through the race and quickened well when going to the front two furlongs out. She won as she liked. She travels, quickens and stays.

Jockey Frankie Dettori revealed afterwards that Enable was the prime reason he had returned to action this week at all.

After a trademark flying dismount, he said: “She's very good. I think she's improved since Epsom and the turn of foot she showed to take control of the race was very impressive. I was in second gear and when I asked her to go she flew. It was hands and heels from there. She’s got a great cruising speed for a stayer. She’s got everything.”

Trainer John Gosden said: "Enable is probably the best we've got. She's exceptionally good and she won well at Epsom. I thought Frankie rode her beautifully today. I thought sitting second and then kicking was the way to do it. There was no real pace but she's class. Maybe she'll take the colts on at some stage, absolutely. She is in the King George in two weeks and we'll see what we think."

Enable is the 14th filly to achieve the Classic Gr.1 Epsom and Irish Oaks double and the first since Snow Fairy in 2010.  It was a great result for her owner/breeder Khalid Abdullah of Juddmonte Farms.  Enable is a half-sister to the Gr.2 placed Contribution out of the Stakes winning mare Concentric (Sadler's Wells ), a full-sister to Gr.2 winner and Gr.1 Prix de Diane runner-up Dance Routine , who is the dam of multiple Gr.1 winner Flintshire .

For trainer John Gosden she was a second winner of the race, after Great Heavens in 2012, a full-sister to Enable's sire Nathaniel.

The Newsells Park Stud based stallion Nathaniel has now sired eight Group or Stakes horses in 2017 from his first-crop, and looks to have very exciting times ahead!
