Nathaniel wins Gr.1 Coral Eclipse

Nathaniel gamely landed the Coral Eclipse (Gr.1) over 1m2f at Sandown today on his debut this season for trainer John Gosden and joint owners Lady Rothschild and Newsells Park Stud.

Indeed it was a magnificent double for Nathaniel's dam Magnificient Style, winner of the Musidora Stakes, as the full sister to Nathaniel, Great Heavens, comfortably won the Lancashire Oaks (Gr.2) at Haydock earlier in the day.

The siblings are among eight Stakes winners out of Magnificient Style which also include Playful Act (Gr.1 Fillies' Mile and dam of Gr.2 winner, Giants Play), Echoes in Eternity (Gr.2 Park Hill Stakes & Sun Chariot Stakes and dam of Gr.3 winner, Whispering Gallery), Percussionist (Gr.2 Yorkshire Cup) and Changing Skies (Gr.3 The Very One Stakes).

Newsells Park Stud has recently purchased an interest in last year’s Group 1 King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner, Nathaniel, with a view to standing the beautifully bred son of Galileo at the stud at the end of his racing career.

Nathaniel was returning to the racecourse for the first time since October, after a troubled preparation this spring which saw him miss his intended prep run in the Gr.3 Brigadier Gerard Stakes.  Having seen off the initial challenge of Group 1 winners Cityscape and Monterosso, Nathaniel then had to hold off the late charge of Farhh, but Nathaniel was equal to the challenge and started to draw away again to win by half a length.

Given his long lay-off, this was an extremely impressive performance, which was confirmed by a Racing Post Rating of 129, the second highest in the last 10 years after Sea The Stars. It also confirmed Nathaniel as probably the best middle distance horse of his generation and lays the foundation for an exciting summer and autumn campaign, and a possible rematch with superstar Frankel, who was only half a length in front on their respective two-year-old debuts.
